This trek is perfect for beginners or those on a tight schedule, as we don’t venture too far into the jungle. Despite only spending one night outdoors, we’ve packed the journey full of wonderful sights and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Day One: Journey Into The Jungle

To reach the entrance of such a remote place, a multi-leg trip by land and water is required. This will take roughly two hours. Departing the Se San River, we will spend the next four hours trekking into Virachey National Park, stopping only briefly for lunch. We will set up camp by the riverside, right next to a natural swimming spot.

Night One: Food, Glorious Food!

Using freshly chopped bamboo instead of pots and pans, our guides will prepare a multi-course meal for you. One guest told us it was better than a fancy restaurant in Phnom Penh! Dinner wouldn’t be complete without some locally brewed rice wine. Relax the rest of the night, or join us for a low-impact night trek as we seek out the nocturnal critters of the jungle.

Day Two: Bamboo Omelets

The morning starts off strong with a delicious omelet, baked to perfection inside a reed of bamboo. Within two hours of trekking, we will reach the gorgeous Oh Kraleong waterfall and take a much needed swim at its base. Note: on the four day trek, this is where we camp on the third night! After two more hours of trekking, we will return to the Se San River. A ferry will take us across the water to the remote Koh Peak village.

The Kachok People

Their language is only spoken by clusters of tribes here and in Vietnam, but their culture predates the Khmer Empire itself. Devout Animists, their approach to death, mourning, and the celebration of a spirit’s passing gained international attention after preservation efforts by UNESCO shared their culture with the world.

Lunch With The Locals

Before getting a tour of their unique way of life, we will be treated to lunch within the home of one of the locals. Afterwards, we will see the ornate cemeteries that the Kachok are known for. The opportunity to learn about their local culture is a rare treat. As the afternoon wanes, we will make our journey home, just in time for dinner!

Don’t Leave Just Yet!

Having spent the past two days trudging through a remote jungle, we’d understand the desire to postpone your departure by a day or two, spend a whole twenty-four hours doing absolutely nothing. Lucky for you, our homestay is the only one in Ratanakiri that provides guests with a private bungalow, your own shower, and a porch (complete with hammock!) that stays shady and cool all day. You can easily extend your stay by a day—or a week!
